Dear NZSIA Members,
As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming winter season, there’s an undeniable sense of excitement in the air. Get ready to dust off those skis and snowboards because we’re in for an epic ride. Here’s a roundup of what’s been happening and what lies ahead for the New Zealand 2024 Winter:
Northern Hemisphere
We’re thrilled to announce that this year’s Northern Hemisphere Season experienced impressive growth, with a particularly notable increase in the Snowboard Division. It’s exciting to see more individuals opting for Snowboard courses than ever before, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for snowboarding within our community and for many members choosing to become qualified in both Ski and Snowboard divisions. This trend underscores the dynamic nature of our courses and the diverse interests of our members.
AGM
Industry Discount for 2024
The plan for 2024 – It will be a voucher system again like last year, allocated from your Resort Snowsports Manager. Each resort will have a limited number of vouchers, giving the resorts the ability to target where they would like to further develop their Snowsports school.
If you want to book on a course, we recommend securing your place at full price, then if you are eligible for a voucher, we can apply the discount retrospectively.
Important Conditions of Registration Updates:
Pass Allocations and Lift Ticket Purchases for Course Days: For those attending courses at Cardrona, we have secured pass allocations for the days you are booked on the course.
It’s important to note that this arrangement applies uniquely to Cardrona. For all other resorts, there are no limits or blackout dates for lift ticket purchases. However, regardless of the resort, please be aware that lift tickets can only be purchased on the morning of the course from the resort ticket office. Additionally, you’ll be entitled to a fantastic 50% discount on lift passes when attending a course if you don’t hold a season pass for the resort.
Code of Conduct Concerns: A concern that surfaced at the end of last season and again this year was individuals teaching without concession or ‘Teaching in the Black’, some of whom were reportedly members of the NZSIA. This is a breach of our NZSIA Code of Conduct and may lead to disciplinary action from the NZSIA, as well as sanctions from the resorts. We urge all members to adhere to resort practices and respect the guidelines set forth by our organisation.
Reminder: Updates to Ski Level Three
A quick reminder about recent updates to the Ski Level Three pathway. Your feedback has been invaluable, leading to important changes and we’re excited to share some key changes with you for this season:
1. Enhanced Flexibility: We’ve made adjustments to make the Ski Level Three pathway more adaptable, offering you greater freedom in choosing your instructor pathway.
2. Revised Requirements: To achieve the Ski Level Three Certification, you’ll need to pass the Level Three Ski and Teach Exam components, as well as complete two of the following Certifications:
– Children’s Ski Teaching Level One Certification
– Freeski Level One Certification
– Race One Certification
– A Level One qualification in a secondary discipline (e.g. snowboard, telemark, adaptive, cross country)
These qualifications can be either from NZSIA or recognised foreign equivalents.
3. No Set Order: You’re no longer restricted to a specific order for completing these Certifications. You can now tackle them in any order that works best for you.
4. Friendly Reminder: Remember, you can only pursue one secondary discipline qualification. For example, if you already hold Snowboard Level One, you’ll need to choose from Children’s Level One, Freeski Level One, or Race One.
These updates aim to simplify your journey and provide you with a smoother experience. Your Level Three certificate will be awarded upon the completion of all required modules.

Preserving Our History
This summer, we embarked on an exciting project led by Peter Clinton-Baker and Simon Cawley to curate resources and stories from the NZSIA 50th celebration. It’s still a work in progress and we invite you to contribute any photos, stories, or old resources you may have stored away to help preserve our rich history – bookings@nzsia.org. It is still a WIP, but check it out: NZSIA History
