How a Van Full of Skis (and Beer) Helped Launch Telemark in NZ

The NZSIA Telemark Division has a colourful history—one that began in the early 1980s with a group of passionate pioneers determined to bring the art of free-heel skiing to Aotearoa. From developing the first instructor courses to sleeping in vans full of ski gear (and boxes of Kutz beer!), the story is rich with grassroots energy and innovation. In 1986, Nevada Sports backed a nationwide tour where trainers visited ski fields across New Zealand, offering free lessons and finishing each week with a dual slalom race. Over 450 people were introduced to telemark skiing on that tour alone, laying the groundwork for the Telemark Division we see today.

Important Update: Lift Pass Discounts for NZSIA Courses

We want to update you on changes to lift ticket discounts for NZSIA courses.

As of this season, NZSIA no longer has direct access to discounted lift tickets at New Zealand resorts. If you are booking a course, we encourage you to check directly with the resort for their lift pass options.

That said, if you are currently employed by a New Zealand resort but attending a course at a different resort, you may still be eligible for a discounted lift ticket. Please contact your employer for the correct documentation. You will need to have:

  • A letter from your employer confirming your employment
  • Your current NZSIA membership card
